It is a rainy, chilly, overcast Thursday, January 9, 2014 in Bellingham, WA; but we can't complain when we consider the extreme icy storms being experienced across the nation.
STUDENT/PARENTS-SENSIBLE COLLEGE HOUSING!
A student who has opted to live on campus at, letís say, Residence Hall, will be paying $2,706/quarter or $902/month for just a single room with no meal plan. This includes a shared bathroom with the rest of the hall or suite depending on the building.
Birnam Woods Apts - an on campus 2BR apartment with no meal plan for a non-first year student costs $4,082/quarter or $1,360/month.
This is steep when you consider that these are costs that cannot be recouped. If parents are paying the dorm fees, wouldnít it make more sense to buy than rent? We presently have on the market a condo selling for $145,000. If financed over 30 years at 20% down and 5% interest, the payments would be about $770 (no PMI required with 20% down). When your student has finished his/her schooling, the cost and more could be recouped in the resale of the home with it appreciation value. Something to consider! Check with any of our professional real estate agents to find out available options for you and your studentís financial circumstances.
